38 Missourians qualify for 2016 USATF Olympic Trials

The 2016 USA Track and Field Olympic Trials are underway in Oregon, with the 20k Race Walks being held yesterday in Salem, and the track and field events getting underway today in Eugene. Thirty-six athletes who were born, grew up in, competed at Missouri High Schools, compete/ed collegiately in Missouri, or are married to a Missouri native have qualified for the 11 day event that determines Team USA for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
One qualifier has already had to scratch as Brentwood High School senior star javelin thrower Sophia Rivera is still recovering from an elbow injury which cost her her senior summer season. Hopefully this year will see a handful of Missourians make the team for the Olympics like five did in 2008, and four in 2012. One notable athlete missing from this year’s Trials. Christian Cantwell, a two-time Olympian in the shot put who won the silver medal in 2008 and placed fourth in 2012. Cantwell has had more than his fair share of injuries over his career and at the Downtown Lawrence, KS. Shot Put in April said he just needed a lot of reps to get where he needed to be this season. Apparently Cantwell hasn’t gotten there, sadly.
